what your seeing is not the Quick Pick button on the Status Bar but the change in selection
what people are talking about was the button on the status bar in the bottom lower right corner of the Notes client prior to Notes 8 Standard.
As for the selection woes you are having, even Jeff Eisen agrees. His recent blog talks about selection and what the team is thinking about doing in the future. http://www.jeffeisen.com
